The Strains in Spain Are Mainly From The Plane
America is producing some of the world’s leading strains. That was one of the many takeaways from the recent Spannabis expo in Barcelona. For anyone who doesn’t know, this is Europe’s premiere cannabis event, bringing people from a reported fifty different countries to attend the show or the various competitions and events held throughout the city. For a whole week, you’ll find smokers from around the globe seshing together at the numerous private smoking clubs where a gram of flower can cost you around 20 euros (about $21.50). While growers in Spain are doing an impressive job, the menus are pretty familiar.
Every place has its particular look and menu specialty. With somewhere around fifty clubs in the city, even a week isn’t enough time to tour them all but we went to some of the most recommended ones and spoke with people about their experiences. What we found is you can find see a lot of jars with Runtz, Animal Mints, and Zkittlez crosses. Other places had Face Off, Oreoz, Gary Payton, Red Velvet, and even Permanent Marker. Some places had American sections highlighted on their menu.
Some of the more interesting options at the clubs were things that highlighted older but still well-known strains like Hardcore OG (DJ Short’s Blueberry x Big Bud), and Strawberry Cheesecake (Chronic x White Widow x Cheese). For the crowd of more established stateside smokers, the excitement was all about finding a nice bag of Amnesia Haze, though more than a few of them had bags sporting the Ozark (OZK x Jealousy) from Terps Army, both the #17 and #16.
Since Spannabis is also a big time for seeds, the American seed companies who went over saw a huge interest in their seeds which will become part of the menus at next year’s gathering. Zazaya (Papaya x Z3) from Terphogz, Brrr Berry OG x Purple Punch from Purple City Genetics, and HG23 (Holy Grail Kush x Kosher Kush) from DNA Genetics were all sold out items by Sunday, with Humboldt Seed Company reporting a run on their Blueberry Muffin.
As far as what the Americans were after? Karma Genetics reported that their Karma Sour Diesel BX2 and Headband were both in high demand. Grateful Seeds from Italy reported high interest from the American sector in their Orange Groovy BX (Orange Cookies x 26mm) x 26mm (ZCube 2 x Allen Wrench). Another big competition winner this year, Bask Triangle Farms, said that their Spannabis-only releases of a Zkittlez x Double OG Chem and Zkittlez x (Zkittlez x Cookies & Cream F2) had been a huge hit.
If you couldn’t already tell, the Z terps were in full effect in the seed selections and the contest winners with Spain’s La Sagrada Farms taking home the win at Spannabis’ competition with their Zkittlez rosin. As we see more of a mixing of the European and American scenes, there are bound to be more frequent crossovers in flavors and techniques but when they finally open the gates and let us go worldwide, it’s nice to know there’s a community out there waiting with open arms.
